Should you be interested in any aspect of my work, or would like to own a sketch as a reminder of a short visit to our beautiful state, roadside sketches straight out of the sketch-book cost from $75, with the same beautifully mounted and framed from $290. Water colour work is priced on an individual basis, and some additional costs relate to work commissioned at remote locations.

Drawn to the West                               Until the gold rush days of the 1890's, the story of Western Australia was one of survival rather than success. Shortage of labour and capital was somewhat alleviated by eighteen years of convict transportation. The colony suffered great isolation and sparce settlement of its largely arid land. These decades of hardship are reflected in the many vernecular buildings: The old Post Office at Mt Barker; Mangowine Homestead at Nungarin; and Bridgestow House at Bridgetown.  Western Australia's historical architecture is so often overlooked in today's hectic world, yet WA has much to be proud of: A spring-time drive through the Avon Valley's highways and byways, awash with springtime colour; the lovely valley towns of York,  Toodyay and Beverley, all settled in the very earliest days of colonisation and still boasting much of their original architecture; the tranquility of New Norcia's uniqueness and isolation in the rolling hills of  Victoria Planes, just over one hour North of Perth, and East through the hillside town of the Darling Ranges,

and the South to the many timber towns scattered throughout the vast Karri and Jarrah forests.  This website then shows some of my sketches and water colours, which are a brief but deliberate attempt to capture a little of this vast state from an artistic point of view. This endeavour will continue into my retirement, and I hope to highlight some of the well-known and perhaps not so well-known corners of Western Australia with my sketch-book and water colours.                                                        Enjoy my work, Derek Newton.
